Sustainability Sciences

Our environmental sustainability scientists look for opportunities to better understand and manage the environmental impacts of Unilever products and activities. This requires development and application of state-of-the-art science: this website illustrates some of our scientific research activities in the area of environmental sustainability. Publications from the sustainability team at Unilever’s Safety & Environmental Assurance Centre (SEAC), including those delivered through external collaborations, are listed. SEAC’s environmental sustainability science underpins the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) commitment to halve the environmental footprint of sourcing, making and using our products.

Advancing Science

Within Unilever, we have been using life cycle assessment (LCA) approaches for many years to assess the environmental impacts of our products. This information is used to inform internal decisions in support of environmental sustainability objectives. As well as applying existing LCA methods, we have a history of contributing to new methodological developments that can inform business activities, e.g. those designed to tackle climate change, eliminate deforestation, reduce the impacts of agriculture and preserve natural capital.
